 Aquaman spends its fourth weekend at #1. Wow, impressive. I'm still not certain if A Dog's Way Home is in the same Dog-verse as A Dog's Purpose or not. There's also something called A Dog's Journey coming in May. It's hard to say how much Kevin Hart's recent controversies eclipsed the promotion of The Upside, but I don't really hear anyone talking about the movie itself at all. The movie is a remake of the hugely popular The Intouchables. Keanu Reeves outside of John Wick has struggled, so Replicas likely won't make the top 10. Expanding wide after an impressive run in limited is On the Basis of Sex. If this had been gone, it seems like it would really be breaking out big time. Still, this is an impressive run for Focus.

Welp, that was an ending. So much right, yet so much wrong. Can't believe A Star Is Born only won one award. But really: they went with the two biggest backlash-friendly films of the season as their winners. I don't think I've been so angry since Crash won Picture at the Oscars. I literally yelled ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? when Nicole announced Bohemian as the winner. AND GOD DAMN IT NOW I HAVE TO ASSOCIATE MY NICOLE WITH THIS BULLSHIT!??!?!

So a film won Picture and Actor and the director wasn't thanked at all? Hmm.

+I don't like the new design of the statue. It looks cheap, and yet it's probably twice as expensive.

+The ladies of The Favourite should host the Oscars.
+Olivia Colman is a god damn delight.
+Gaga makes Jenna Maroney's LIVING THEATRICALLY her life mission. Wear a smaller dress next time.
+Jamie Lee Curtis and Ben Stiller were an inspired pairing. AND YES MENTION THAT HUGE HALLOWEEN OPENING!
+Surprise presenter Taylor Swift! Cats is coming next year! She looked good, and I forgot her boyfriend would be there.
+I loved Patricia Clarkson hugging so many people on her way to the podium. It was like "Oh, hey, I worked with you!"
+Linda Cardellini had the best seat in the house and people kept thanking her. Is she dating Bill Murray, though?

+Chris Pine is hot, but I wanted Pfeiffer to give Jeff the award.
+Regina's speech was sooo good. Her son was so sweet on the red carpet. Mama raised a good son!

+Christian Bale was kinda drunk and I'm here for it. Drunk Christian Bale can host the Oscars. He mentioned playing Mitch McConnell next and thanked Satan. Here for this.
+Both of Alfonso's wins - it felt like forever until he got to the stage. Took me forever to figure out Julianne Moore at his table and what they worked on. Also, why did Richard Madden kiss Julianne before his date? Richard is yummy.
+Fosse Verdon ad! I didn't even know it was into filming that much?
+Why did they not mention Hathaway being a Golden Globe winner but did her co-presenter Jessica Chastain? Wut.
+Glenn Close got 2 standing O's. Yup, I think the Oscar is hers. Gaga wins Song, Glenn wins Actress. I think this was clear as day for most of the season, but I just bought into the hype recently. Stupid me.
+Dick Van Dyke and Emily Blunt get a Standing O'. It was equal. Let me live in my dream world.
+Kind of a disappointing night as far as new GIFs are concerned.

Aquaman continues its #1 domination. At this rate, it'll be DC's second highest grossing film domestically, behind only Wonder Woman. Mary Poppins continues a respectably leggy run. Not quite the home run we all expected, but a definite base hit. Escape Room is the only opener, and should do the typical early January horror numbers. This month ahead looks fairly weak, with likely only Glass being a huge hit. Legs for the holdovers should be strong.

Box: Christmas Update

Aquaman sits atop the box-office and will probably stay there well into the New Year. It earned $22m on Tuesday, with its total at about $106m. The upcoming weekend should see a gross in the low to mid 40's. The big question will be can it get to $200m by the end of New Year's Day.

Mary Poppins Returns has been performing lighter than expectations. It brought in $11m on Christmas Day for a total just under $50m. I honestly expected to have almost doubled that total by now. Disney probably should have opened it Christmas Day. As of right now, my initial predicted total gross of $300m will be way too high. With legs taking it into a very light January, it should manage $175m+, though a lot of people are paying close attention to its day to day holds. Gross for the upcoming weekend should be in the mid to high 20's.

Meanwhile, Bumblebee looks to be performing exactly as expected. It's tally after Christmas Day was just about $34m. Another film with a leggy run in store, it should finish with $110-120m. That's the lowest grossing of the franchise and with a budget of $135m, it'll need strong overseas numbers. 3-day ahead looks be low to mid 20's.

Holmes and Watson and Vice were the only Christmas Day openers. Holmes brought in over $6m, but it received a D+ Cinemascore, almost unheard of for a mainstream comedy. With a current 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, this film will be lucky to have any legs at all. Vice took in $4.8m on Tuesday with a low C+ Cinemascore. It'll rely on awards nominations to carry it through January, though it's worth noting that Wolf of Wall Street still had a leggy run despite a "C" Cinemascore. Both films should see a weekend gross of low 8 figures, if not quite hitting the teens. Holmes will fade fast after that.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took in $5.6m on Tuesday with a total gross of about $74m. The upcoming weekend looks to be in the mid to high teens. It'll pass $100m before New Year's Day. Beyond that, $130-140m looks to be where its domestic gross will end up.

The Mule did just under $5m on Christmas, bringing its gross up to $42m. A 3-day gross between $12-14m should be in order, while its final total hitting $80-90m.

The J-Lo starrer Second Act had its biggest day yet with $3m, and a total of $10.6m. The comedy is headed toward $35-40m total, which is okay.

Welcome To Marwen is officially the bomb of the holiday season and is expected to lose about $50m. It took in $1.3m on Tuesday, with its tally at just over $4m. It probably won't do more than $20m. Another dud for Robert Zemeckis.

November holdovers The Grinch (at $258m yesterday) and Ralph Breaks the Internet ($165m) will have another week to get in some business before exiting first run theaters. Both films will probably add about $15-20m before all is said and done.

Period pieces The Favourite and Mary Queen of Scots are neck and neck. Both brought in under $900k in about 800 locations. Favourite is at $11.5m, while Mary is just under $5m. Both will add $4-5m by the end of New Year's Day.

In limited release, On the Basis of Sex did a very impressive $14k PTA in just over 30 theaters. That's a fantastic start and, despite a mediocre critical reception, it might just prove to be a mainstream crossover success. (I believe it goes wide on the 11th.) If Beale Street Could Talk expanded to 65 locations, and had a strong PTA. At just under a million, the film will get a rollout throughout January, eventually going wide on the 18th. Annapurna's other release, Destroyer, did okay on Tuesday earning $30k in 3 theaters. It is currently schedule to go wide on January 25th.

Five openers, and two more on Tuesday, plus a lot of expansions! The 21st through the 1st promises to be crazy. Aquaman will open at #1 for the weekend, but I suspect Mary Poppins will take over on Christmas Day and be #1 into the new year. Bumble Bee has very good reviews, but it's competing with both Aquaman and the very well received Spider-Verse. Should still be enough to cross $100m. The J-Lo vehicle Second Act was supposed to open back in November, and probably should have kept that date. It'll most likely get lost in the competition. Welcome To Marwen has dismal reviews, so even its strong ensemble won't be able to save it. Mortal Engines looks to be the bomb of the season. It will probably only do about $25m domestic on a $100m+ budget. Ouch.

3 openers should add some life after 2 weeks of barely any movement. Spider-Man has great reviews and could be leggy if there weren't three movies opening next week after some of the same market. The Mule is one of the few movies, along with Vice, opening in the next two weeks aimed squarely at older audiences. (Plus, the films expanding!) Mortal Engines should have opened last weekend, even though it's looking to be a big non-event anyway. As for Once Upon a Deadpool, it apparently is only a 12-day run. I still can't believe Fox is wasting prime box-office real estate on a recut movie that opened 7 months ago. Just as amazing is that they are getting 1,500+ theaters to play it. The Favourite expands to 500+ locations after a great run in limited. It should hold well over the coming weeks before its Oscar bump kicks in. I guess Green Book won't be adding a substantial amount of theaters until Oscar nominations. It's holding on very well. Vox Lux is going into 300+ locations. Neon really should have held it for next year. It's an award season non-starter, so there was no point in pushing it in an already incredibly crowded December. No idea how many theaters Mary Queen of Scots expands to, but it did very well last weekend in a handful of theaters. If Beale Street Could Talk opens this weekend, though I'm not sure what its expansion plans are. Probably won't go fully wide until mid or late January. Lots of excitement at the box-office!

SAG Reactions!

Double Blunt noms! The Bluntski's did very well this morning!

Regina King missed! Wow. Screener issues? That's so odd. We'll see if the internet lets SAG off the hook for this. They have before, while the Globes and Oscars have both endured backlash.

So Adams, King, Weisz and Stone in Supporting. Who gets that last slot? BAFTA will help decide. Actess and Supporting Actor look set. Actor - I guess we're all gonna predict Hawke until he doesn't happen.

Bohemian in ensemble? Good Lord, why? That may be the worst ensemble nom they've ever given. It's not even a real ensemble?

Ensemble lineup is blockbuster heavy. Some are saying that's what a Popular Film category at the Oscars would have looked like.

As for TV, they are streaming-heavy! And surprisingly newer! SAG has done a good job of nominating newer stuff lately, when they used to be worse than the Emmys. They are never going to give up Grace and Frankie, though.
