If I Picked the Winners...

(Only "voting" in categories where I've seen all nominees.)

Best Sound: Sound of Metal

Best Production Design: Mank

Best Original Song: "Husavik" - Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
Ugh, it's frustrating how easily this should be running away the Oscar. The other songs are fine, good even, but they all sound exactly like. (Minus the standard Diane Warren ballad.) All are end credits songs that have very little potency to their respective films. "Husavik" is incorporated well into Eurovision's story, and the moment where Rachel McAdams performs it absolutely kills. And remember, I don't even care for that film, but that moment takes it up a whole notch.

Best Original Score: Minari

Best Film Editing: The Trial of the Chicago 7
So this is probably my big surprise pick. The editing is very good in the film, and probably more central to the narrative than the other nominees.

Best Cinematography: Nomadland

Best Animated Feature: Wolfwalkers

Best Adapted Screenplay: Nomadland

Best Original Screenplay: Sound of Metal
This was a bit of a tossup.

Best Directing: Chloé Zhao - Nomadland
