So I ended up completely wrong about Aladdin. Hopefully this upcoming weekend lives up to the promise it has. This new Godzilla may not have the reviews the 2014 film had, but marketing has been strong. I suspect it performs somewhere between what the 2014 film did and Kong: Skull Island. Rocketman has solid reviews and is one of the few releases that will play to older audiences. It won't be Bohemian Rhapsody (Thank god!), but it should do well enough. Lastly is Ma, which many box-office followers have pointed out feels like an odd choice for the end of May. I think the last movie of this type to do well in this slot was The Strangers way back in 2008. Had the film opened in late summer it might have done bigger numbers as there's a lot of competition. But again, marketing has been solid and reviews aren't terrible. Bigger point: it only cost $5m. One of the bigger box-office stories of the past weekend, at least among Film Twitter, was the disappointing performance of Booksmart. I never thought it had much of a chance in that slot, but it is sad when original films with great reviews struggle. Unless it has a strong hold, it'll most likely start losing significant screens nexst weekend. Your move.
