Split opened to $40m last weekend, which was fantastic. I think it might have been only 5th January release to do that. Three openers this weekend, and a bunch of Oscar expansions. Resident Evil should fare better than the recent Underworld movie. Why those two franchises haven't done a crossover installment remains a mystery. Maybe that's next? A Dog's Purpose has been the source of controversy, but I think tracking is still very good and I have to wonder how many people actually know about the leaked video. The remaining opener is another Weinstein awards reject. It's odd that he saved The Founder and Gold for the end of January rather than just releasing them earlier in the fall (or August when The Founder was originally slated) and focused his attention on turning Lion into a hit. Lion will get a big expansion next weekend, so it definitely has a chance to catch on with mainstream audiences. Arrival will go into a 1,100+ theaters, so it should cross $100m. Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight are both adding a significant number of theaters, too. Moana is doing a Sing-Along release. If there ever was a moment where Disney needed to realize that Moana is NOT Frozen, it should be now.
