89th Reaction

I held off because I had other shit to do. Who knew?

My heart weeps for my beloved Amy Adams. But I guess it might have been apparent last time she was nominated that she probably wouldn't be nominated again unless she was a legit threat to win. Man, I'm not the only feeling this sting. There's actually articles being written about her absence. I doubt she cares too much, but it is apparent with this snub that she is one of the most beloved actresses working.

Nicole Kidman is now a four-time nominee! Yip!

#OscarsSoWhite takes a year off, while skeezy men becomes the new controversy. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Worth noting: there are a lot of black nominees outside of the acting categories. Only three of this year's Best Picture nominees feature a straight white male character as the sole lead.

La La Land ties All About Eve and Titanic for the most nominations.

Meryl Streep earns her 20th nomination. Viola Davis becomes the most nominated black actress with her third. See why OscarsSoWhite was so important? Octavia Spencer is the first black actress to get nominated for an Oscar after having already won. This is the first time that three black actors (in this case women) were nominated in the same category.

Partially serious: can Meryl remove herself from contention? I think about half of her nominations lately are embarrassing.

Suicide Squad is an Oscar-nominated film. Even though I think Deadpool is a better movie than Squad, I'm happy Squad got a nomination over Deadpool because of how smug the latter's "fake" campaign (real campaign) was.

For the second time, Michael Shannon gets an Oscar nomination with no major precursor support. He's the male Marcia Gay Harden.

The way the nominations were announced was stupid. They tried to make it more personal, but with the power point presentation between talking heads, it just felt more impersonal.

89/107 = 83.2%
Top 8 = 88.6%

Last year: 79/106 (74.5%) & 36/43 (83.7%)
2015: 84/106 (79.2%) & 36/43 (83.7%)
2014: 79/107 (73.8%) & 36/44 (81.8%)
2013: 80/107 (74.8%) & 36/44 (81.8%)

So I did the best this year out of the past 4 years. These might have been too predictable, but I do think the classic "Oscar Movie" might be over. In a way, that's a very good thing.
