Brian Grazer In, Ratner/Murphy Out - HOSTS FYC

What's with all the controversies leading to firings/"stepping down"?

Anywho, megaproducer Brian Grazer will replace Brett Ratner as co-producer of the 84th Academy Awards. After Ratner stepped down yesterday, host Eddie Murphy joined him today. This leaves three and a half months to find a new host.

That's plenty of time as usually the host isn't even announced till late November, early December. Back before the announcement was made to have Murphy host, I was going to create a list of people I've love to see take the MC duties. I may do one by the weekend as who knows how fast they'll announce a new one.

Ratner rightfully was fired, err, sorry, "stepped down" after several statements he made while promoting his latest cinematic offering Tower Heist. The main one that got people upset was "rehearsals are for fags." He also made sexist/racist remarks about Olivia Munn. After his resignation, many were curious as to whether Murphy would remain as host. That was answered faster than expected. Similarly, the question as to whom would replace Ratner was answered at lightning speed.

What I hope is something I've said here numerous times: the Academy and its show producers need to stop chasing people who couldn't care less about the show and film. Stop bringing inexperienced young actors to produce ratings. Never works. Stop trying to bring in edgy comedians when you're only going to give us neutered versions of them. Never works. Stop trying to find ways to cut the running time of what will always be a long show. Never works. And how bout this: rather than trying to win over an audience that just doesn't care about this stuff, work on pleasing the people that do care.

Just embrace what are you and have fun with that. Yes, if you end up going the way of the Tonys and don't get a ripple in the pop culture universe, that's fine. At least they put on a show that honors and showcases the best their art form has to offer.

And I'll give a throwback to a previous post. Look at what Amy Poehler and her fellow nominees did at the Emmy's. Sure, shenanigans. But did it at devalue the category, the nominees or the show? Fuck no.

So, my FYC for hosts:

+the afforementioned Poehler. She has the energy to keep a three hour show going. It'll be a nice excuse to bust out her hilarious Sharon Stone impression.

+Steve Martin. The Steve Martin of the 73rd, 75th and 81st Academy Awards. Not the one where he co-hosted with Baldwin.

+Tina Fey and a male cohost. (Steve Martin, Steve Carell or Robert Downey Jr, perhaps.) I don't think Fey could do it alone, she works best when playing off someone. The three I mentioned have given her some great award show moments.

+Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. As long as Anne doesn't have some deadweight stoner bringing her down, she's got the old school Hollywood entertainer thing down pat. Throw in Jackman, with similar skills, and these two would be gold.

+The cast of Bridesmaids. Though knowing the Academy, they'll probably try the cast of Hangover or some stupid shit. The red-hot McCarthy and limitless Wiig would kill it.

+Meryl Streep. Cause she's actually really funny and who better to host than the most nominated actor ever?

+Given Jon Stewart a third time. Or Ellen a second.

+And, yes, Facebook campaign: The Muppets would be amazing hosts.

I really hope its not Billy Crystal. His era is over and he hasn't been in a notable movie in ten years. I liked most of the times he hosted, but even he wasn't that great when he appeared this year. I really wish that revisionist history would stop trying to say he was. His head is too botoxed, too.
