Kevin Hart has stepped down as host of the Oscars after controversy over some of his past tweets.

76th Globe Noms Reaction

Some big snubs, while Vice and Green Book both kind of over-performed. Everything else seemed to miss a nom or 2:

ASIB missed Screenplay and Elliot.
Favourite missed Director. That's a truly bizarre snub.
MPR missed Song - that's a genuine shock!
IBSCT missed Score.
Foy getting in while Gosling misses is a surprise.

And god damn with the amount of new series the Globes can't keep up. Bravo for The Americans and Outlander which may be the only shows beyond a third season to get nominated? (Other than the revivals.)

Damn, I nailed the Comedy categories.

Most of the buzz from insiders was wrong with the exception of them being big on Bohemian Rhapsody.

Rosamund Pike was probably, as far as actors go, the big surprise of the morning. That Drama - Actress lineup was really crazy, though.

Ethan Hawke makes sense as the "misses Globe nom, still gets Oscar nom". First Reformed is very much NOT a Globes movie.

I think the amount of acclaimed performances from this year means there might not be many similar lineups throughout the season. I hope so, at least.

Widows appears to be dead, but could still get a SAG Ensemble nod next week.

Congrats Regina King and Amy Adams on double nods. I suspect King takes Supporting and Adams takes Actress Limited/Movie.

They didn't like Maniac at all.

(Sidenote: This is the first time in a good while I've seen the third and fourth hour of The Today Show. The third hour was particularly painful. I had no idea who any of those people were. And can they seriously stop it with the "How has anyone seen these movies?!?!? They aren't out yet?!?!" You get fucking screeners, dumbass. You then proceeded to talked about binge watching your screeners. Jesus H. Christ.)

Congrats Nicole Kidman on her 13th Golden Globe nomination. As fluid as that actress category is, she might be able to add another Oscar nomination. Someone compared her nomination to Denzel's Roman J. Israel noms, and that kinda makes sense.

No changes in the top 10. Re-releases seldom do well unless it was of a big blockbuster film. The Favourite continues to do big business in limited, though I'm not sure how much it expands this week. I assume it will be in a hundred theaters or so. Mary Queen of Scots, Vox Lux and Ben Is Back all open in limited this weekend. The first will probably fare the best. A Star Is Born is getting an IMAX push this weekend, which will coincide with it likely leading the Globe noms. It's currently at $194.2m. As for Green Book, I'm not sure why Universal isn't expanding it. I guess they are waiting for Oscar noms? Who knows how much that'll end up doing!

Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg to Host the Golden Globes!

Now this gets a big WAHOO! from me. The Oscars attempted to steal some of the Globes announcement week thunder by announcing their host yesterday, but the Globes stole it back and then some.

Golden Globe winners Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will host the 76th ceremony. Samberg previously hosted the Emmys and the Independent Spirit Awards. As far as I know, Oh has never hosted an award show. With Samberg's goofy energy and Oh's deadpan skills, this is a ridiculously inspired pairing. The two presented an award together at this year's Emmys and were great together.

There was a trailer for this in front of Halloween nearly a month and a half ago. That trailer never made it online for some reason, as this trailer looks to be a slight variation. They've clearly upped the ante for the sequel and this looks totally batshit crazy. I'm ready.

I didn't do predictions last weekend because estimates for the weekend came in early Wednesday, so why even bother? Only one opener this weekend, and nothing next weekend. After that, it's a bloodbath. I thought Green Book would get an expansion this weekend, but it doesn't look like it's adding too many theaters. No idea what Universal's plans are for that. The Favourite scored the highest PTA of the year last weekend and will be adding a small handful of cities this weekend, and more in the weeks to come.

I'm sure there's a floor for the Fantastic Beasts franchise, but this new installment might dip just below that. I don't feel any excitement for it, but it's still part of a big franchise universe. Instant Family will have the benefit of being one of the only PG-13 comedies in the marketplace, seemingly the first in a good while. Widows is hoping to turn box-office gold into award season gold. It'll be a good test to see if audiences are still in the mode for a well-reviewed, modestly budgeted, R-rated adult-aimed drama after the success of A Star Is Born. A Private War and Can You Ever Forgive Me? both appear to be getting a wide push. The former will probably only do about a million, while the latter could do $1.5-2m. The Melissa McCarthy dramedy should hold well over the next month, enough to hopefully do about $15m total.

Bohemian Rhapsody was huge last weekend. It also is popular with mainstream audiences, so we'll see how it holds up against November's big family films. Nutcracker did okay, but poorly when taken the budget into consideration. Again, the remaining family films might put it out for good. The Grinch should do well this weekend, but it'll probably be leggy throughout the next month and a half. Don't underestimate Illumination. Most predictions for Overlord are modest, but I thought the trailers were good and reviews are solid. With Halloween's strong October days over, it might do decent numbers. The Girl In the Spider's Web is coming too late to make significant numbers and it's a smart move by Sony keeping the budget low. A Star Is Born continues to be leggy and with award season bumps will probably be able to cross $200m. Lastly, Beautiful Boy expands to wide release but it's performance so far has been slight.
