'Scream 5' Is a Go

Ready or not, Scream 5 (or is it Scr5am?) is happening.

The film will be written and directed by the filmmakers behind last August's mini-sleeper and soon-to-be cult fave, Ready Or Not: Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. This is a positive development for the sequel/reboot/whatever. Ready Or Not blended comedy and horror very well, but most importantly had a terrific final girl in the form of Samara Weaving. Those are two very important elements for a Scream film. There's no word on what the story will be or if anyone from the first four films will be returning.

I would say it's probably best to start over with a completely new story, and leave Sidney, Gale, and Dewey back in Woodsboro. I'm more curious in how this sequel would play out in the current horror world, as one of the reasons the original film was such a huge hit was how the story and its characters existed after the wave of 80's slasher fare. That said, I would not at all be upset to see a Wes Craven's New Nightmare take on the series with everyone playing themselves.

I would imagine they would like to get this out in time for December 2021, just in time for the first film's 25th anniversary.

From Bloody Disgusting:
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett make up 2/3s of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence. The group was behind the “10/31/98” segment of our own V/H/S, as well as the “Way Out” and “Way In” segments of our Southbound. The other member of Radio Silence is Chad Villella, who is on board to executive produce the new Scream alongside Kevin Williamson.
