Pikachu may have had some of its buzz stolen by the other fan properties. Or not? It feels like buzz has lightened over the past couple of weeks, but it is an audience that is hard to track. For families that didn't want a superhero movie, there hasn't been much offered this year. The Hustle and Poms both hope to capitalize on Mothers Day Weekend. Poms will probably be the leggier of the two as it skews older. The Hustle also feels kind of light as far as buzz goes, and neither of the films have any reviews yet. Not a good sign, but not really surprising. (Hustle was actually supposed to open last summer, but I think that was probably too close to the production.) Last year, Life of the Party and Breaking In both did solid if unspectacular numbers. Book Club opened the weekend after and bested both. Lastly, Tolkien is the fourth opener. It seems odd to open a smaller film instantly in wide release in such a competitive time. Perhaps it would have done better had it been saved for the end of summer.
