A lot of craziness going on: Into the Woods and Unbroken are the big openers for the weekend. Woods has a light theater count (only about 2400 theaters) which (witch!) is very odd. Unbroken will give it a run for the money for biggest non-Hobbit movie over the next week and a half. Jolie has been promoting the hell out of the film and, despite lackluster reviews and no onscreen star power, there does seem to be a lot of interest. The Gambler will most likely get lost in the shuffle, as Wahlberg's draw is occasionally spotty. Big Eyes is the last remaining opener, and it might not even make the top 10. Imitation Game expands into just over 700 theaters. It's been a steady performer these past couple of weeks, and should continue to impress. Awards season is helping it, and will continue to. Lastly comes The Interview. The film is now opening in just over 300 theaters, and is also going VOD. Obviously, the film will be aided by a mammoth amount of free publicity, and the studio will reportedly expand it further on New Year's Day. It should be a fun performance to monitor, and could set a big precedent for future simultaneous theatrical/VOD releases.
