SAGdix

Tomorrow night on TNT & TBS at 8PM Eastern.  These used to almost always be on Saturday nights until maybe 8 or 9 years ago, but moved back this year because of the Olympics next month and few Sundays being available.

Female Actor in a Supporting Role - Jennifer Lawrence
(alt - Lupita Nyong'o)  Whoever is taking this is probably taking the Oscar.  Unless Oprah surprises.  And that would be awesome/hilarious.

Male Actor in a Supporting Role - Jared Leto
(alt - Michael Fassbender)  This is probably locked up.

Female Actor in a Leading Role - Cate Blanchett
(alt - Sandra Bullock)  Ditto.

Male Actor in a Leading Role - Matthew McConaughey
(alt - Bruce Dern)  I'd say this is probably locked up too.  Maybe.

Ensemble - American Hustle
(alt - 12 Years a Slave)  This might be close.

I've seen all these Ensemble nominees, so here's my personal ranking.

1. American Hustle - A genuine ensemble film and all the actors are terrific.  Most importantly, they all get nice showcases and seem to be acting in the same film.  MVP: Amy Adams

2. 12 Years a Slave - There are several performances in this film I really love, it must be said.  However, there's way too many different styles of acting clashing.  Actors appear in the same scene, but appear to be acting in a completely different film than one another.  I also think there's some amature stuff (Paul Dano, for one).  MVP: Chiwetel Ejiofor

3. Lee Daniels' The Butler - Eh, this is okay.  I don't have a problem with most of the actors here.  The film itself has lots of problems.  But most of the actors are fine.  No really great roles though, lots of distracting cameos.  MVP: Forrest Whitaker

4. August: Osage County - Great actors are done in by a sloppy adaptation and poor direction.  Meryl Streep, in particular, I found to be actually terrible in this.  That "eat the fish, bitch" scene is one of the worst scenes in a mainstream film this year.  Juliette Lewis, I also found to be bad.  Julia was very good until the aforementioned "fish" scene, and I wish Abigail Breslin had more to do.  Same with Chris Cooper and Benedict Cumberbatch.  MVP: Julianne Nicholson - I wanted more of her.  I really hope other directors notice what she did here and give her more chances.  Based on her costars reaction to her, she seems pretty popular among her peers.

5. Dallas Buyers Club - Despite Leto and McConaughey hitting career and 2013 highs, this is not an ensemble film.  It's inclusion here is ridiculous and offensive.  Outside of those two, you have Jennifer Garner playing a barely written character.  And then no one else?  MVP: Jared Leto
