The Revenant shocked everyone last weekend by doing just under $40m. It also had a surprisingly solid Cinemascore grade of B+. It's going to do well tomorrow morning and Leo-buzz is everywhere (thanks to that Gaga shade), so it'll have a strong hold. Star Wars (which is definitely NOT doing a billion domestic anymore) will be knocked from its throne by that and 2 newcomers. Ride Along 2 will do well, though I don't see it getting as high as the first. 13 Hours is a Michael Bay film and with military themed films doing very well in this slot, it'll do fine. Not great, but decent enough. Norm of the North is the third opener, taking advantage of the lack of animated films to Kung Fu Panda 3 comes along. As for the Oscar films, Spotlight is getting a big expansion (and I'd expect another one next weekend) and The Big Short will remain in the top 10. I'm sure Room is adding some theaters, but I suspect most of the expansions will come next weekend. Academy, move the nominations back to Tuesdays so theaters can alter their bookings and take advantage of the holiday weekend.
