Box: But when will The Force go back to sleep?

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $105m
The undisputed king of the box-office. The season, the year, soon to be all-time! By Sunday night, it'll be at around $760m, so looks like $1 billion domestic is definitely happening. Shiiiiiiit. I suspect Ride Along 2 might be the first film to challenge this film's #1 spot.

2. Daddy's Home - $21m
The dearth of comedies really helped this, which will be in the low 80's by the end of the weekend. A final gross between $130-150m is in store. It's hard to tell how legs will be for Christmas openers, but this is the only non-animated family-friendly movie coming out for awhile.

3. The Hateful Eight - $17m
This did very well in its "roadshow" release, even if the screenings themselves were met with many technical glitches. (RIP film!) It's now opening wide Wednesday, because Harvey Weinstein can never decide on a date. It'll be in the low 30's after this weekend, but I suspect reaction will be lukewarm. With The Revenant going wide next weekend, this won't have much staying power. Still, a gross between $75m-85m looks good.

4. Sisters - $11.5m
The Fey-Poehler force is strong with this one, which will be at about $62m by Sunday night. Turns out this is hurting Joy more than the other way around, so while $100m is probably out of the question it should hit high 80's/low 90's.

5. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip - $11m
After the long holiday, it'll be in the mid 60's, so it probably finishes just below $100m. Hopefully, this is the last installment.

6. Joy - $10.5m
It's already showing to be a little front-loaded. By the end of the weekend, it'll be at just under $40m, and with no major awards prospects it might not get higher than $70m total.

7. The Big Short - $9.5m
This is doing much better than I expected. Hitting the low 30's by this Sunday, it's doing very well with awards and is getting another expansion on the 8th. $75m-85m might be where this ends up. Very solid, all things considered.

8. Concussion - $7.5m
Why was this released at Christmas? I'm not sure this would have done better at any other time of the year, but this isn't really something people want to see at Christmas. The Will Smith starrer will be in the mid 20's after this weekend, and I doubt it crosses $40m when all is said and done.

9. Creed / The Good Dinosaur / The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 / Point Break - $4m
Point Break is DOA with a budget of $100m. Who thought that was a good idea? It won't even do $30m domestic. The rest of the Thanksgiving leftovers saw spikes in business. Creed will probably end up with $115m domestic barring any major award noms. Dinosaur is Pixar's first outright flop and will only make about $125m, while the last Hunger Games film will end up with just under $285m.
