Anthony Minghella 1954 - 2008

He worked with some of the best actors alive and crafted lush, epic films that intimately examined their characters. The English Patient, even if you didn't love it, was a film you had to respect. Cold Mountain, unfortunately, was destined to be disliked because of it being perceived as the biggest threat for Lord of the Rings Oscar for most of 2003, but the film has some absolutely breathtaking sequences, and wonderful performances from Jude Law and Natalie Portman. Seriously, the cast of Cold Mountain is huge and everyone is quite good. But The Talented Mr. Ripley is the film I am most grateful to Anthony for. A beautiful, haunting film, one of the best ever made in my mind. And Matt Damon is perfection, one of the best performances of the 90's. And hey, Anthony gave us Jude Law all sexy and Gwyneth all Hitchcock blonde.

What a stylish filmmaker and what a small, but lovely filmography to leave behind. He will be missed.
