92nd Oscar Predictions

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
1917
AVENGERS: ENDGAME
THE IRISHMAN
THE LION KING
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
WILL WIN: I would only be surprised if Skywalker took this. My gut says THE LION KING, given 1917 and The Irishman's effects are mostly supporting.
I'D VOTE FOR: This is surprisingly tough, but 1917's were so flawlessly incorporated. I had some minor issues with Irishman and the remaining three have all been there-done that.

BEST SOUND EDITING
1917
FORD V FERRARI
JOKER
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
WILL WIN: Ford will put up a good fight, but I think both sound categories are going to 1917.
I'D VOTE FOR: I'd go with Ford in this category.

BEST SOUND MIXING
1917
AD ASTRA
FORD V FERRARI
JOKER
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
WILL WIN: Ford will put up a good fight, but I think both south categories are going to 1917.
I'D VOTE FOR: I'd go with 1917 in this category.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
"I CAN'T LET YOU THROW ME AWAY" - TOY STORY 4
"I'M GONNA LOVE ME AGAIN" - ROCKETMAN
"I'M STANDING WITH YOU" - BREAKTHROUGH
"INTO THE UNKNOWN" - FROZEN 2
"STAND UP" - HARRIET
WILL WIN: Elton John will take this home for ROCKETMAN.
I'D VOTE FOR: Not a big fan of any of these and I'm still upset about Wild Rose's snub for "Glasgow". I'll go with Frozen 2.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
1917
JOKER
LITTLE WOMEN
MARRIAGE STORY
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
WILL WIN: JOKER's haunting strings will take this with ease.
I'D VOTE FOR: I'd probably actually go for Joker, the only category it deserves.

BEST MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING
1917
BOMBSHELL
JOKER
JUDY
MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL
WILL WIN: BOMBSHELL
I'D VOTE FOR: Hmm, a tough one. I'll go with the surprise Maleficent sequel, as I remember thinking the work was incorporated flawlessly.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
THE IRISHMAN
JOJO RABBIT
JOKER
LITTLE WOMEN
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
WILL WIN: LITTLE WOMEN's duds will just slightly hold off Jojo and Hollywood.
I'D VOTE FOR: Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, because there's a wide variety of costumes on display from the era.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
1917
THE IRISHMAN
JOJO RABBIT
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
PARASITE
WILL WIN: A tight race between 1917 and ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, but I'm expecting the latter to prevail.
I'D VOTE FOR: Hollywood

BEST FILM EDITING
FORD V FERRARI
THE IRISHMAN
JOJO RABBIT
JOKER
PARASITE
WILL WIN: Ford could take this. It's probably a photo finish, but I'm predicting PARASITE.
I'D VOTE FOR: Parasite

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
1917
THE IRISHMAN
JOKER
THE LIGHTHOUSE
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
WILL WIN: 1917, getting Deakins his second.
I'D VOTE FOR: It's easy to root for 1917, but I'd lean towards The Lighthouse.

BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE
CORPUS CHRISTI
HONEYLAND
LES MISERABLES
PAIN AND GLORY
PARASITE
WILL WIN: PARASITE

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
AMERICAN FACTORY
THE CAVE
THE EDGE OF DEMOCRACY
FOR SAMA
HONEYLAND
WILL WIN: AMERICAN FACTORY

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD
I LOST MY BODY
KLAUS
MISSING LINK
TOY STORY 4
WILL WIN: Klaus seems to be coming on strong at the last minute, but the Academy's basic tastes will allow TOY STORY 4 to prevail.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
THE IRISHMAN
JOJO RABBIT
JOKER
LITTLE WOMEN
THE TWO POPES
WILL WIN: JOJO RABBIT has won the bulk of industry adapted screenplay awards. Sorry, Greta.
I'D VOTE FOR: Little Women

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
1917
KNIVES OUT
MARRIAGE STORY
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
PARASITE
WILL WIN: Buzz has shifted entirely from Quentin to PARASITE.
I'D VOTE FOR: Parasite

KATHY BATES - RICHARD JEWELL
LAURA DERN - MARRIAGE STORY
SCARLETT JOHANSSON - JOJO RABBIT
FLORENCE PUGH - LITTLE WOMEN
MARGOT ROBBIE - BOMBSHELL
WILL WIN: LAURA DERN
I'D VOTE FOR: While Dern is one of my all-time favorite actors, Florence Pugh gave the best performance of this bunch.

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
TOM HANKS - A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
ANTHONY HOPKINS - THE TWO POPES
AL PACINO - THE IRISHMAN
JOE PESCI - THE IRISHMAN
BRAD PITT - ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
WILL WIN: BRAD PITT
I'D VOTE FOR: Tom Hanks

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
CYNTHIA ERIVO - HARRIET
SCARLETT JOHANSSON - MARRIAGE STORY
SAOIRSE RONAN - LITTLE WOMAN
CHARLIZE THERON - BOMBSHELL
RENEE ZELLWEGER - JUDY
WILL WIN: RENEE ZELLWEGER and I'm hoping against hope that Hollywood will continue to find good roles for her.
I'D VOTE FOR: I don't really truly love any of these performances, even if I adore some of the actresses. Saoirse Ronan gets my (not real) vote.

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
ANTONIO BANDERAS - PAIN AND GLORY
LEONARDO DICAPRIO - ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
ADAM DRIVER - MARRIAGE STORY
JOAQUIN PHOENIX - JOKER
JONATHAN PRYCE - THE TWO POPES
WILL WIN: JOAQUIN PHOENIX
I'D VOTE FOR: Antonio Banderas, whose subtle work has stayed with me since I've seen his film.

BEST DIRECTING
SAM MENDES - 1917
MARTIN SCORSESE - THE IRISHMAN
TODD PHILLIPS - JOKER
QUENTIN TARANTINO - ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
BONG JOON-HO - PARASITE
WILL WIN: 20 years after his first win, SAM MENDES takes it again.
I'D VOTE FOR: Bong Joon-Ho

BEST PICTURE
1917
FORD V FERRARI
THE IRISHMAN
JOJO RABBIT
JOKER
LITTLE WOMEN
MARRIAGE STORY
ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOD
PARASITE
WILL WIN: The buzz is swinging Parasite's way, but I'm still sticking with 1917. Worth noting: my Best Picture prediction has been wrong the past 5 years.

And my personal rank of the Best Picture nominees:
1. Parasite
2. Little Women
3. The Irishman
4. 1917
5. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood
6. Jojo Rabbit
7. Marriage Story
8. Joker
9. Ford V Ferrari
