Abominable gets an ultra-wide release, while Judy opens in just under 500 theaters. Last weekend continued a pretty strong (by recent years' standards) September. Abominable is the first family-aimed film in a good while. The last genuine hit in that regard was The Lion King, which is still in the top 10. These September family films are hard to predict. The first 2 Hotel Transylvania movies were huge, but then there's also Storks and Smallfoot. They did solid, but unspectacular business. There's only a few family-aimed films before the holidays arrive. The other opener is Judy, which begins what will likely be a fruitful awards run for Miss Zellweger. At the very least, it should be able to outgross recent Best Actress nominees like The Wife or Jackie. Any more will depend on how much of a pull Zellweger still has and how much people want to see a Garland Biopic. It's a strong time for adult-aimed films, finally. Good!
