Watch the 91st Oscars!

Daniel and Charlize are very serious presenters
The 91st Academy Awards air Sunday February 24th at 8PM Eastern, with official red carpet coverage beginning on the network at 6:30PM Eastern.
Captain Marvel and Nick Fury go for gold

This year has seen numerous award season controversies that seemingly have left all of Film Twitter and the online communities surrounding awards with a massive headache. It was announced last summer that the show would be streamlined, with categories taken out and given during the commercial breaks to hit a 3 hour running time. The Academy also announced a "Popular Film" category. Both decisions were eventually cancelled after severe online backlash, and internal threats from various guilds in the industry. Petitions were mounted by high profile members of the film community.

One wonders how far the repercussions will extend, as the Academy's Board of Governors and President John Bailey may be in for a rude awakening at the various meetings that will be held throughout the year after the ceremony. We hope. It is worth noting that these changes seem to be coming from the top, as ABC reportedly has a major say in how the ceremony will progress after ratings dropped to an all-time low of 26 million viewers last year. Ratings are down all across television. The Super Bowl's ratings are down. (I believe they had 10+ year low this year.) The Emmys are down. The Grammys are down. The various sports games and playoffs throughout the year are down. Yet, only the Oscars is the one that is required to go through some massive overhaul. Why? I have no fucking clue.

And all of this is without touching the host controversy. For the first time in 30 years, the ceremony will go on without a host. I've said many times they should try a host-less show, so we'll see how things go. With the producers involved and all the drama over network demanded changes, I don't have high hopes for this show. That said, I hope I can watch it. My area is supposed to be hit with hard winds tomorrow and Monday, with widespread power outages predicted. In fact, a lot of the country is having major "weather events", so those ratings probably aren't looking too good.

But on we go...
