90th Reaction

I think in all honesty these were probably the best we could have hoped for. In particular, they nailed Directing. A near perfect lineup.

The Shape of Water leads with 13 nominations! Dunkirk earned 8, while Three Billboards was nominated for 7. Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread for 6. Lady Bird and Blade Runner 2049 each got 5. Call Me By Your Name, Get Out, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Mudbound were nominated for 4 a piece.

First woman to ever be nominated for Cinematography! Congrats, Rachel!

Sad that "In a Heartbeat" was snubbed from the shorts. I thought given it was one of the most popular shorts in a good long while that it would be a shoe-in for the win, but I guess not.

I sorta knew I, Tonya was being overestimated, as was The Big Sick.

Mary J. Blige is a double nominee! That Song lineup is very mainstream-friendly, so I'd imagine they'll all be performed on the ceremony.

Meryl gets her 21st nomination! Denzel officially becomes the male Meryl with his nom for a film that bombed and got mediocre reviews.

Even if I still predicted her, I was right about Hong Chau. She just had too much to overcome. I hope Hollywood finds good work for her. I AM happy for Manville because she deserved a nom (and win!) for Another Year back in 2010.

No James Franco! Controversial opinion, but he should have been nominated.

Christopher Plummer: Fuck you, Kevin Spacey!

Octavia Spencer ties Viola Davis as the most nominated black actress. 3 noms.

Netflix got in to major categories. I won't say the bias is over just yet - I really think they need a Best Picture nominee and a win in a major category to say that it's officially over.

(What the fuck does Jake Gyllenhaal have to do to get nominated???)

Wonder Woman gets zero nominations. :(

I want to say that I kind of loved the nomination presentation. The little shorts were all wonderful and I'd love to see stuff like that on the actual ceremony. Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis were a very fun team, even if I wish we'd go back to the Academy President and Previous Nominee/Winner announcing the nominations. I really think Haddish will be high on the list to host if they skip Kimmel next year. Speaking of him, that commercial with Warren Beatty was cute.

Outside of all this, I have no major complaints. It was a good nomination morning. The only problem is the race from here on out is probably predictable. I have no clue if Shape of Water will be able to take down Three Billboards, but it's looking like the latter's backlash already has a victim: it's director.
