OSCAR PREDICTIONS (2nd of 2)

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
THE BIG SHORT
BROOKLYN
CAROL
THE MARTIAN
ROOM
Will Win: The Big Short
I'd Vote For: Room (Again, haven't seen Carol. Saw the rest.)
Should Have Been Nominated: Mad Max's endless creativity isn't just visual. It comes straight from the page.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
BRIDGE OF SPIES
EX MACHINA
INSIDE OUT
SPOTLIGHT
STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
Will Win: Spotlight
I'd Vote For: A tough call between Machina and Inside, I'll go with the latter.
Should Have Been Nominated: It's too bad so few people saw Bone Tomahawk because it would have made a worthy winner.

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
CHRISTIAN BALE as Michael Burry in THE BIG SHORT
TOM HARDY as John Fitzgerald in THE REVENANT
MARK RUFFALO as Michael Rezendes in SPOTLIGHT
MARK RYLANCE as Rudolf Abel in BRIDGE OF SPIES
SYLVESTER STALLONE as Rocky Balboa in CREED
Will Win: Sly
I'd Vote For: Rylance (I've seen all of these.)
Should Have Been Nominated: Richard Jenkins from Bone Tomahawk, doing stellar character work as always.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
JENNIFER JASON LEIGH as Daisy Domergue in THE HATEFUL EIGHT
ROONEY MARA as Therese Belivet in CAROL
RACHEL McADAMS as Sacha Pfeiffer in SPOTLIGHT
ALICIA VIKANDER as Gerda Wegener in THE DANISH GIRL
KATE WINSLET as Joanna Hoffman in STEVE JOBS
Will Win: This is a tight race between Alicia and Kate. Voters might want to make it a Kate and Leo night, and Winslet has won the BAFTA and Globe. Anytime Kate has beaten Alicia, it's been for when Alicia was nominated for Ex Machina. Alicia has beaten Kate when nominated for Danish, and I'm predicting she'll just barely pull off a victory over Kate again.
I'd Vote For: Jennifer Jason Leigh (Sorry, Regina George. I still love you!) ((I haven't seen Carol. Have I said that before?)
Should Have Been Nominated: Between Get Him To the Greek, Bridesmaids, Neighbors and now Spy, can I just declare Rose Byrne the Best Supporting Actress of the Decade? (Oh, and Vikander should be here for Ex Machina, not The Danish Girl.)

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
BRYAN CRANSTON as Dalton Trumbo in TRUMBO
MATT DAMON as Mark Watney in THE MARTIAN
LEONARDO DiCAPRIO as Hugh Glass in THE REVENANT
MICHAEL FASSBENDER as Steve Jobs in STEVE JOBS
EDDIE REDMAYNE as Lili Elbe / Einar Wegener in THE DANISH GIRL
Will Win: Leo
I'd Vote For: Michael Fassbender. (I've seen all the nominees.)
Should Have Been Nominated: Samuel L. Jackson in The Hateful Eight

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
CATE BLANCHETT as Carol Aird in CAROL
BRIE LARSON as Joy "Ma" Newsome in ROOM
JENNIFER LAWRENCE as Joy Mangano in JOY
CHARLOTTE RAMPLING as Kate Mercer in 45 YEARS
SAOIRSE RONAN as Eilis Lacey in BROOKLYN
Will Win: Brie
I'd Vote For: Brie (Haven't seen Carol or 45 Years.)
Should Have Been Nominated: There were a lot of great performances this year for lead actresses, but given the love for Mad Max it would have been nice to see Charlize Theron back in the race.

BEST FILM DIRECTING
ADAM MCKAY - THE BIG SHORT
GEORGE MILLER - MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
ALEJANDRO G. INARRITU - THE REVENANT
LENNY ABRAHAMSON - ROOM
TOM MCCARTHY - SPOTLIGHT
Will Win: Alejandro
I'd Vote For: George. It's sad how far ahead he is in this crop and how little a chance he has of winning.
Should Have Been Nominated: David Robert Mitchell makes every inch of the frame in It Follows a terror waiting to happen.

BEST PICTURE
THE BIG SHORT
BRIDGE OF SPIES
BROOKLYN
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
THE MARTIAN
THE REVENANT
ROOM
SPOTLIGHT
Will Win: The power of Leo and that aggressive campaign will take The Revenant all the way.

My personal ranking of the nominees:
1. Mad Max: Fury Road
2. Room
3. Brooklyn
4. Spotlight
5. The Big Short
6. The Martian
7. Bridge of Spies
8. The Revenant
