The Social Network arrives with the best reviews of the past couple of years and has positioned itself as the Oscar frontrunner. Now, whether that translates into audience love is another beast. Those looking at it simply as "that Facebook movie" will be hard to win over and it seems like there is already a backlash building against it. Similarly, Let Me In has pretty damn terrific reviews but this very different take on the vampire/horror subgenre might be too pensive for mainstream audiences. Both films have the critics on their side big time, and given the time of the year, that is the best buzz a film needs. Modest openings, leggy runs. Elsewhere, Case 39 opens (actually in theatres!) after a nearly 3 year delay. It'll be good promotion for Zellooper or whatever we're going to call them. They are together because they are in love. Or they are together so she can seem relevant and he can seem straight.

Scream 4 Wraps Production, First Still and Behind the Scenes Video Release
Entertainment Weekly scored the first official image released for Scream 4 - Gale in the barn. All signs lead me to believe the film's barn sequence will be epic, so I was happy to see this. The caption for the image is as follows:
"COURTENEY COX SCREAMS AGAIN - When Scream 4 opens April 15, 10 years have passed. Cox's character, Gale Weathers, is now married to Dewey (Cox's real-life husband, David Arquette). 'I kind of gave up my job as the entertainment journalist,' says Cox. 'I'm bored with my life and my marriage.' Bringing a little excitement to town is Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). Her return leads to more Ghostface murders, which reenergize Gale. Says Cox, 'Thing start happening, and I couldn't be more thrilled.'"
Meanwhile, Entertainment Tonight went behind the scenes for some brief interviews with Cox, Campbell, Arquette, Craven and Roberts. Footage from that is here.
And as the segment mentions, Scream 4 wraps production this week. Today, the 24th, is rumored to be the last day giving it an almost exact 3 month shoot with a budget said to be around $40 million. It was fun anxiously awaiting for info about the film as it was filmed and discovering new cast members. But it looks like that is all till the film's trailer premieres. I expect it before the end of the year.

The top two are gambles. Most are predicting Wall Street 2 to open in the high 20's, low 30's - a number I'm not getting at all. I don't know if its the combo of the current state of the financial market and the amount of press Michael Douglas is getting of late, but its not like the original is still talked about that much. And random sequels that come out decades after the original rarely do well. But whenever I "don't get" why others predictions are so high, I usually end up in the wrong. Zack Snyder's owl movie would be the type of movie that should open higher given the drought of family films in early September, but there's minimal buzz on this. Still, it has the animated family market to itself till early November. As for You Again, it had one of my favorite lines in a trailer of recent ("Somebody call Us Weekly...") and the combo of Jamie Lee and Sigourney has my ticket money, but last week's Easy A - with its great reviews and red hot starlet - has seemingly already eclipsed it.
God, that was a lot for a non-summer weekend.

MTV VMA's are tonight.
While I won't once again bash the network for being a showcase for people with no other lifeskills than getting trashed and getting STD's that like to be watched by 12-year-olds, I will say that last year's VMAs was one of the best in years. The performances were all terrific (Beyonce and Gaga, especially) and of course it had one of pop culture's watercolor-iest moments in the form of Kanye's dissing of Taylor to her face. Both are expected to return in hopefully what will be one of the most awkward moments in television history. I hope Kanye does something stupid again. That would be amazing. Looking forward to watching Florence + The Machine and Gaga perform. Will have to close my ears when Katy Perry delivers another terrible live performance. And hoping that host Chelsea Handler is drunk off her ass and tells some people off to their face. As for the winners, I hope....

4 more 4 Scream 4; Bell & Brody discuss the film
Some of this is a little late, some of it new:
Shanae Grimes (Beverly Hills 90210), Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars), Brittany Robertson (Life Unexpected) and Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights) have all joined the cast of Scream 4. Craven himself showed a pic of Robertson and Teegarden filming this past week. It would appear that these aren't substantial roles, and are small cameos in the various Stab sequels that will pop up throughout the film. That could also be the roles that Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin are playing, but I doubt we'll know for awhile. Or any combination of the 6 could be the opening? So basically the population of Woodsboro is now 80% white women between the age of 18 and 22?

This will be one of those weekends where any of this week's openers or last week's number one film could be #1. I'm using the basis that if Grindhouse bombed, why would Machete do well? Going the Distance has some fun ads, but most of the reviews aren't too kind. The American has okay reviews, but its the type of movie that needs good to great reviews to bring its target audience in. When you think you have them pegged and they'll do the right thing, they fallback on the most mundane of winners.

So I'd happily vote for the other freshman series, which had some of the biggest laugh-out-loud moments since Arrested Development. Columbia/Brown, anyone?

Honestly, I could care less about this. Baldwin is been there, done that. I think Parsons is great in what I've seen of the show. Its just ridiculous Steve has yet to win. I guess they are saving it for next year, his last.

All of these women are terrific. Tina, Julia and Toni have already won. Toni could repeat, easily. I'm expecting Falco because she's a veteran and the show was liked enough to get into series. Lea is a deserving nominee but will sit the night out. Nothing would make me happier than a Poehler upset. That she wasn't recognized earlier in the year by the Globes or the SAGs is a disgrace!

This is a lot like the drama supporting categories. Jesse is the only one I can't see winning. Obviously they weren't going to give Charlie or Two and a Half Men nominations cause that would be shameful. Maybe they'll allow Cryer to repeat. That's assuming they didn't see the reactions of the crowd when he won last year. Assume the Modern Family guys cancel each other out, and that allows award show staple Harris to finally win. I hope he gives a shout-out to his fellow gays.

Sookie Stackhouse/Rogue & Veronica Mars/Sarah Marshall to get Barrymore'd in Scream 4?
Dimension Films has confirmed that Oscar-winner (the first for the franchise!) Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell have joined the rather large cast of Scream 4. Given this announcement along with what is known about the script and the timeline of the production, all points lead to the two being the "opening death cameo". In what was revealed of the screenplay, there are two female characters named Patty and Marnie in the script's opening pages. The only problem might be that these were supposed to be high school age. While Bell and Paquin aren't quite grandmothers, they won't exactly fit in the age range of fellow cast members Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere. Maybe they changed them to grad students. Either way...
This has me very very very pleased.
Bell previously appeared in Dimension's awful Pulse remake, and Paquin has had her fair share of genre affiliation: Dimension's awful Darkness, the wonderful Trick'r'Treat, a cameo in her brother's film Open House and of course her work on HBO's deliriously sexy vampire series True Blood.
And again, the cast they've assembled for this entry is better than I ever could have imagined. Great work guys!
'The Walking Dead' trailer
I'm looking forward to this more than any other movie coming out for the rest of the year. Anyone that knows me well knows how much I love zombies. Don't know if it is smart to debut this Halloween night, as I thought it was going to debut earlier in October. That might make the ratings massively frontloaded, but I feel based on the anticipation I've seen online that AMC will have a big hit on their hands. I was not expecting it to borrow some plot from 28 Days Later, though I'm uncertain if that stems from the source material.

Ugh @ Vampires Suck. It's too bad there isn't a parody of Twilight that actually gives the series and its fans just what they deserve. Instead, we'll be given a movie where people will get hit in the head by random objects or have stuff dropped on them. Perhaps the most annoying aspect of these strings of "parodies" are how they have to point out to the audience just what it is being spoofed. Por ejemplo - "Hey, there's Alice!" "Look, it's Juno and a piano dropped on her head." "Oh no! GI Joe is GAY." "That couple is on a DATE NIGHT and they just fell down a hole." "OMG Iron Man is getting gangraped by Robin Hood, Shrek and the Prince of Persia." Then, the gag ends, and they move on to the next set piece. It's pretty bad when we long for Scary Movie 4.

Instead, we'll be given a movie where people will get hit in the head by random objects or have stuff dropped on them. Perhaps the most annoying aspect of these strings of "parodies" are how they have to point out to the audience just what it is being spoofed. Por ejemplo - "Hey, there's Alice!" "Look, it's Juno and a piano dropped on her head." "Oh no! GI Joe is GAY." "That couple is on a DATE NIGHT and they just fell down a hole." "OMG Iron Man is getting gangraped by Robin Hood, Shrek and the Prince of Persia." Then, the gag ends, and they move on to the next set piece. It's pretty bad when we long for Scary Movie 4.

Summer BOX: Julia Roberts Vs. The Should-Be-Too-Old-For-This-Shit Action Stars
Oddly enough, Eat Pray Love has some kind of review embargo, so there won't be any reviews till Friday. Not a good sign. But the internet fanboys have already shown their nasty side: they are looking forward to The Expendables but say Julia is now too old to star in a romcom? WTF. I guess she doesn't have enough steroids (outside of her head, anyways) to win them over. Anyways, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World has the year's coolest cast and looks like a ton of fun. So of course it'll probably bomb.

I'm going softer on Other Guys because the movie looks so bleh to me and higher on Step Up because I think the morons who liked the first 2 will want to see the third installment in 3D!!! 3D!!! And these dumbass dance movies have a way of surprising. I'd also like to point out Step Up 3D is by the same guy who produced this year's Oscar telecast. Further proof he should never be invited back. Next week looks much more promosing with Julia, Michael Cera and all the action guys. Till then...

Summer Box Office: Will 3 New Movies Top Inception? In their dreams.
Dinner for Schmucks (yah!), Charlie St. Cloud (yuck!), and Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (.......) open this weekend, with tracking all over the place. All could top $15m, all could make less than $15m. I'm looking on the positive side, but I still don't get why there would be any interest whatsoever in the Cats and Dogs sequel. The first one opened back in July of 2001 and I didn't think people were tripping over themselves for a followup. But whatevs. I'm not sure how many theatres Kids Are All Right is expanding to, but it looks to hit wide release. Initially, I thought this might be too soon. But it did extremely well last week in over 200 theatres and with Eat Pray Love opening in 2 weeks, this was probably a smart move.
