"Thank you life. Thank you love. It is true there is some angels in this city."

Cate Blanchett is the dog from No Country for Old Men.

Good show, great winners.

There was a severe lack of star power and glamour, mostly due to the lack of grace and innovation on the red carpet. It was like there was only 3-4 dresses, each just done in a different style. The best part of the red carpet had to be Gary Busey, Ryan Seacrest and Jennifer Garner. Wow, that was about the most awkward thing I've ever seen. Garner looked genuinely scared, Laura Linney couldn't give a shit less, Seacrest actually showed some manliness by practically throwing Busey away, but part of me really wanted to see Gary beat up Ryan. Ah well. What the hell were Heidi Klum and Seal doing there? And Josh Lucas? And Melora Hardin? Too many TV people, if you ask me. But they had a short time to put this show together. All is forgiven.

Stewart's monologue was not as sharp this time, but his bits during the show were amazing! This is what a great host does. He'll definitely be back a few times. (Though, I really miss Steve Martin.) And Stewart bringing Marketa back on stage to speak is going to win him some big fans.

"Star of the 2010 Untitled Nicole Kidman Project."

"Speaks four different languages and just earlier she taught me "I'm calling security" in all of them." LOL! But it should have been "Our next presenter is Penelope Cruz. She speaks four different langauges, not a single one of them being English." No, I love her. Sorta.

And howbout Cate Blanchett's face after the Elizabeth clip? Hilarious. Then, her excitedness when Marion won. She's so hormonal. LOL. Cate and I had the same face though when Marion won.

Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen were very fun. As were Anne and Steve.

Robert Boyle got the only standing ovation of the night. Though, to me, it really felt like Glen and Marketa were damned close. The crowd really loved that song, or perhaps they didn't want to see any more Enchanted-ness. Oh, and again, that Jon McLaughlin guy is HOT! Amy Adams needed a set. Adams is so adorable. Kristin Chenoweth was so not into it. She looked kinda stoned on the red carpet? Ruby Dee is really pretty for her age! I'm babbling! But seriuously, I think the crowd was more excited for Glen and Marketa than anything else the rest of the night. "Wow, that guy is so arrogant." I loved Marketa's facial expression when the music cut her off like "okay, sure, whatever, bye." Then, she came back and gave one of the best speeches of the night.

Josh Brolin and James McAvoy present together. Oh, to be between them.

"In case you're wondering what we do during the commercial breaks, we sit around making catty remarks about the outfits you all at home are wearing."

Jack will knock someoen up by the end of the night. "AND THE BABY GOES TO...."

Frances McDormand was so happy for the her hubby and his brother. She was crying. She's so cool!

The director of the show loves Laura Linney. They cut to her a lot. I was happy.

Katherine Heigl could really pull off a Hollywood ultraclassic glam look, but instead she looks like she got punched on both sides. Keri Russell looked good though and presented very well. Miley Cyrus - bleh.

Go Bourne! I wish Matt Damon and his incredible ass were there, too!

Oh, and when Stewart said "Gaydolph Titler" - Marion turned to whoever she was sitting with and said "Who is that?"

FASHION!

BEST DRESSED:

1. Jennifer Garner

2. Helen Mirren

3. Marion Cotillard

4. Laura Linney

5. Nicole Kidman

It was a really good show, I thought. I wish they'd let every winner speak. I wish E! and TV Guide channel would get DECENT people for the Red Carpet, but then Regis on the ABC show said Xavier for Javier. I know these people have a lot to remember. But their job is in the entertainment field, and to have Joey Fatone say Amy Ryan looks constipated or Ryan Seacrest repeatedly wiping his sweat toward the camera or Regis mispronounce something like that, well, it's pathetic. I wish Bravo or A&E would do red carpet coverage. I think they'd do it a bit better. E! should just get Joel from the Soup or Chelsea Handler to do it. They'd be awesome.

But let me close by saying this is about the strongest set of winners I've ever seen from the Oscars. Maybe the Strike gave people time to actually see the films?

80th OSCAR WINNERS!!!!!

Great winners. Really really great. Like, the best they've been in ages? Probably.

(Fashion kinda sucked and presenters were rather disappointing.)

More thoughts tomorrow.

I'm drunkish.

If I Voted for the Winners....

BEST PICTURE: ATONEMENT
Nominees Seen: All 5.
A toughie. As close as the year Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon went up against Traffic, it would be between No Country for Old Men and Atonement.

BEST DIRECTING: JOEL AND ETHAN COEN.
Nominees Seen: 4 (haven't seen Diving Bell)
Gilroy and Reitman are way out of their league. PTA is, as always, damn awesome, but the Coens are just awesome-r.

BEST ACTOR: DANIEL DAY-LEWIS - THERE WILL BE BLOOD
Nominees Seen: All 5
Easy squeezy. Mortensen would get nowhere near the noms he got without the bathouse scene, Depp probably delivers the best in his third nominated performance. Jones is very compelling, but I think more deserving for NCFOM. It pisses me off that Clooney wasn't nominated for Out of Sight or O Brother but got in for Syriana and Michael.

BEST ACTRESS: MARION COTILLARD - LA VIE EN ROSE
Nominees Seen: 4 (Not Seen: Linney)
Cotillard is in a class by herself, even more than Daniel. Blanchett could do that role in her sleep, and I'm pretty sure she dozed off as some point in the film. Christie is elegant, old and British! INSTANT NOM! No, she's really good, but her costar Gordon Pinsent is way better. And Ellen Page will take it home someday. SIDENOTE: IT PISSES ME OFF THAT OF THE 19 PEOPLE NOMINATED IN THE ACTING CATEGORIES, THE ONE I LOVE THE MOST IS ONE OF THE PERFORMANCES I HAVEN'T SEEN. LAURA, YOU ARE A GODDESS! I'LL SEE THE SAVAGES SOON ENOUGH.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: CASEY AFFLECK - THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD
Nominees Seen: 4 (Not Seen: Holbrook)
So I just found out Hal was in The Fog, so that makes me respect him more LOL. Bardem would be my pick if it hadn't been for the category fraud that is placing Casey in supporting. Wilkinson is memorable, but I didn't feel the passion for his performance I felt for In the Bedroom. But Casey - equal to Daniel and Marion.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: AMY RYAN - GONE BABY GONE
Nominees Seen: 4 (Not Seen: Dee)
Should I really check out American Gangster just for Ruby's 4 minutes of screentime? Blanchett doesn't even give the best performance as Dylan, and when she was opposite Michelle Williams in the film I felt that Michelle (or even someone like Naomi Watts or Julianne Moore) would've been more interesting as the "female" Dylan. Saoirse is terrific, one of the best child performances. Swinton is even better, perfectly nuanced, chilling and relatable. But Amy Ryan sets the screen on fire the way a supporting actress should.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: NANCY OLIVER - LARS AND THE REAL GIRL
Nominees Seen: 4 (Not Seen: The Savages)
Juno is awful flashy, Clayton even more so. And I'll be damned if Ratatouille didn't have that amazing monologue by the critic that brought tears to my eyes. But Nancy's Lars is absolutely whimsical and perfectly developed. Fo shiz!

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: ETHAN AND JOEL COEN - NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Nominees Seen: 4 (Not Seen: Diving Bell)
Awful close. Atonement is my runner-up, more like 1.1 I'd say. Oh, and congrats again to my lovely Sarah Polley! You show amazing potential and WILL be a great filmmaker.

ART DIRECTION: THE GOLDEN COMPASS

CINEMATOGRAPHY: THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD

COSTUME DESIGN: ATONEMENT
(the green dress!)

FILM EDITING: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

MAKEUP: LA VIE EN ROSE

ORIGINAL SCORE: ATONEMENT

ORIGINAL SONG: "Falling Slowly" - ONCE

SOUND MIXING: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

SOUND EFFECTS EDITING: THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (I'd probably actually vote for NCFOM or TWBB, but I think the Bourne series deserves to be called OSCAR WINNING!)

VISUAL EFFECTS: THE GOLDEN COMPASS

ANIMATED FEATURE: RATATOUILLE (the only one I've seen)

And who would you vote for?

Razzie & Indie Spirit WINNERS!

If you think about the shit the Oscars and the Globes get, I think it's far more deserved for the Razzies and Independent Spirit Awards. The Razzies never actually honor the worst stuff of the year - well, occasionally they get it right - and they are partial to starfucking, er, starstabbing more so than the Globes. The ISPs meanwhile snub eligible films for no real reason, give random actors nominations while leaving deserving people off their ballots. Let's examine the past 5 winners for the Independent Spirit Awards Best Film:

Juno
Little Miss Sunshine
Brokeback Mountain
Sideways
Lost In Translation

Isn't this kind of annoying? I'd say these films are more low-budget studio films than genuine independents. 3 of them are genuinely great films that do deserve a spotlight they didn't get at the Oscars, but there are completely indie films out there that never make it here.

RAZZIE WINNERS:
Worst Picture:
I Know Who Killed Me

Eddie Murphy (as Norbit)

The Oscars: WHO WILL WIN!

Tomorrow - who should win!

BEST PICTURE:
1. No Country for Old Men - 35%
2. Juno - 25%
3. There Will Be Blood - 18%
4. Atonement - 14%
5. Michael Clayton - 8%

NCFOM has win every major AMERICAN award, sweeping all 4 major guilds, the first movie to do so since Return of the King. I have Juno second cause I could conceivably buy NCFOM and TWBB being for the same audience, causing vote splitting, allowing for the little indie crowdpleaser (and highest grosser of the batch) to sneak in. Atonement is not last for me - whereas it seems to be for everyone else - due to it winning the Globe and the BAFTA. Can a film that won both of those be listed last? I THINK NOT!

BEST DIRECTING:
1. Joel and Ethan Coen - 40%
2. Julian Schnabel - 28%
3. Paul Thomas Anderson - 20%
4. Jason Reitman - 8%
5. Tony Gilroy - 4%

Schnabel could become the 2nd person to win the Oscar for directing without a Picture nom, but the Coens are still out in front. I just get the feeling that "Diving Bell" will get recognized somewhere.

BEST ACTOR:
1. Daniel Day-Lewis - 45%
2. George Clooney - 20%
3. Johnny Depp - 16%
4. Viggo Mortensen - 14%
5. Tommy Lee Jones - 5%

DDL's getting #2, but I'd like to put Depp as runner up. If it weren't for Cloooney being the cat's pajamas to Hollywood.

BEST ACTRESS:
1. Julie Christie - 30%
2. Marion Cotillard - 29%
3. Ellen Page - 28%
4. Laura Linney - 12%
5. Cate Blanchett - 1%

A close one. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to buy into Marion. For starters, Daniel Day-Lewis and George Clooney have raved her. In EW's secret Oscar ballot thinger, almost everyone said they voted for Marion. I really haven't heard a single person say they voted for Julie. (I heard several for Ellen and Laura.) Damn conformity, everyone is saying Julie.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
1. Javier Bardem - 38%
2. Hal Holbrook - 32%
3. Casey Affleck - 16%
4. Philip Seymour Hoffman - 8%
5. Tom Wilkinson - 6%

Bardem should have this locked up, but never underestimate an old veteran, especially in the supporting category.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
1. Tilda Swinton - 27%
2. Amy Ryan - 26%
3. Ruby Dee - 25%
4. Cate Blanchett - 20%
5. Saoirse Ronan - 3%

Perhaps the category of the night? Dee is in AG for 4 minutes, but apparently is an industry veteran that must have an Oscar. This seems to work better for men than women. Ryan has big Hollywood support through Affleck, but Tilda has bigger Hollywood support through Clooney. This is the best way to reward Michael Clayton. A case could be made for Blanchett, but I think she has more going against her than for her.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
1. Juno - 40%
2. Michael Clayton - 30%
3. Ratatouille - 20%
4. The Savages - 6%
5. Lars and the Real Girl - 4%

The former stripper gets it. Honest to blog!

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
1. No Country for Old Men - 34%
2. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - 28%
3. There Will Be Blood - 22%
4. Atonement - 15%
5. Away From Her - 1%

ANIMATED FEATURE:
Ratatouille. Duh.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE:
I think they'll overlook Michael Moore in favor of NO END IN SIGHT.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM:
No idea. Beaufort sounds nice and foreign though?

CINEMATOGRAPHY:
Oh boy. The supporting actress of the techs! Again, Diving Bell's gotta score somewhere? Roger Deakins has to finally win instead of cancelling himself out? Atonement has no chance right? So that leaves the oil and fire of THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

ART DIRECTION:
Sweeney Todd is awful drab. Atonement is your classic winner here, but something tells me Mr. Sissy Spacek, Jack Fisk, takes it home for THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

FILM EDITING:
Again with Diving Bell winning somewhere, right? RIGHT? No Country for Old Men's editor isn't a real person, and are they really going to give The Coens 4 Oscars each on one night? That would be cool. Hey, howbout honoring that fantastic series with Matt Damon. The rush of THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM wins out.

VISUAL EFFECTS:
I really hope TRANSFORMERS loses, but it won't.

COSTUME DESIGN:
Sweeney still drab? Elizabeth - been there, done that. Across the Universe is showy, but simple. La Vie En Rose would be a great way to honor Marit Allen (RIP!) But Atonement has that green dress. THAT GREEN DRESS! Eh, SWEENEY TODD will win.

MAKEUP:
Pirates already won, Norbit - umm, no. GO LA VIE EN ROSE!

SOUND MIXING:
That Kevin O'Connell has to win for TRANSFORMERS right?

SOUND EDITING:
No clue, maybe Bourne? I'll go with a tech win for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

ORIGINAL SCORE:
ATONEMENT. Nuff said.

ORIGINAL SONG:
I fell hard for FALLING SLOWLY (ONCE) as the Enchanted songs cancel each other out.

Animated Short:
I Met the Walrus

Live Action Short:
The Tonto Woman

Documentary Short:
La Corona.

No idea on the last 3. LOL.

The remaining guilds went to....

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD:
Period: Sweeney Todd
Contemporary: Blades of Glory
Fantasy: The Golden Compass

Terrific set of winners. LOL - Blades of Glory!

American Cinema Editors - The Eddies:
Drama - The Bourne Ultimatum
Comedy/Musical - Sweeney Todd

I started typing "No Country..." till I realized it actually lost something. Bourne isn't surprising, and there's rumors the voters didn't go for NCFOM because it was edited by its directors.

ART DIRECTORS GUILD:
Fantasy - The Golden Compass
Period - There Will Be Blood
Contemporary - No Country for Old Men

Cinema Audio Society:
No Country for Old Men

So No Country for Old Men won the PGA, DGA, WGA and SAG Ensemble, but didn't win the Best Film award at the BAFTAs or the Globes, losing both to Atonement.

I'll be back on Saturday with WILL WIN / SHOULD WIN for the Oscars!

10 Oscar Fashions of the Aughts!

Slimming this list down to 10 was like Sophie's Choice, I tell ya. I limited each person to one (sorry, Miss Winslet) and showed great restraint in leaving off my Nicole. (For the record, her dresses, hair and makeup for the 75th and 76th ceremony are near perfect.)

In alphabetical order...

HALLE BERRY

MARCIA GAY HARDEN

SALMA HAYEK

ANGELINA JOLIE

GWYNETH PALTROW

JULIA ROBERTS

MICHELLE WILLIAMS

KATE WINSLET

First batch of Oscar presenters announced! KRISTIN CHENOWETH TO SING!!!!! AMY ADAMS TO SING!!!!

Oscar® Show Participants Revealed

Beverly Hills, CA –– Eightieth Academy Awards® telecast producer Gil Cates and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis today announced the presenters and performers who will participate in the February 24 Oscar® telecast.

At a press conference held at the Academy’s headquarters today (Thursday), Cates and Ganis announced the presenters scheduled to date, including all four of last year’s winners in the acting categories—Alan Arkin, Jennifer Hudson, Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker—as well as Amy Adams, Jessica Alba, Cate Blanchett, Josh Brolin, Steve Carell, George Clooney, Penelope Cruz, Miley Cyrus, Patrick Dempsey, Cameron Diaz, Colin Farrell, Harrison Ford, Jennifer Garner, Tom Hanks, Anne Hathaway, Katherine Heigl, Jonah Hill, Dwayne Johnson, Nicole Kidman, James McAvoy, Queen Latifah, Seth Rogen, Martin Scorsese, Hilary Swank, John Travolta, Denzel Washington and Renee Zellweger.

Cates and Ganis also announced the performers of the nominated songs. Amy Adams will sing “Happy Working Song” from “Enchanted” (music by Alan Menken and lyric by Stephen Schwartz). Also from “Enchanted” (and written by Menken and Schwartz) will be “That’s How You Know,” sung by Kristin Chenoweth and Marlon Saunders, and “So Close,” to be performed by Jon McLaughlin.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will perform their nominated song, “Falling Slowly,” from the motion picture “Once,” and Jamia Simone Nash will perform “Raise It Up,” from “August Rush,” with the IMPACT Repertory Theatre of Harlem, headed by Jamal Joseph, who shares the song’s music and lyric credit with Charles Mack and Tevin Thomas.

Also scheduled to return to the Oscar telecast team will be writers Hal Kanter, Buz Kohan, Jon Macks and Bruce Vilanch.

Second-time Oscar show host Jon Stewart will also bring on several writers to work on the telecast.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2007 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2008, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m. PT. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Miley Cyrus is probably the only big surprise here, and even that's not too surprising. As long as she's just presenting a song performance, I really don't mind?

But really - AMY ADAMS and KRISTIN CHENOWETH WILL SING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Have you seen this Jon McLaughlin guy? He's really hot!

Random BAFTA thoughts!

A surprisingly good show!

The host is pretty dull, I miss Stephen Fry. I loved when he did a joke and the next shot was Frances McDormand looking so bored.

Marion, Daniel and Tilda's speeches were great. Don't remember Javier? I love Tilda mouthing "FUCK" when she won. A repeat of these winners on Oscar night would be hot. A talented group, to say the least.

Rosamund Pike is gorgeous. What a beautiful face! They cut to her and Keira a lot. Keira laughed at every joke the host did. And James McAvoy was his regular hot self. Ugh, I need to get McAvoy'd.

Jessica Biel is now blonde and looks like Sienna Miller. It was sweet when they did the In Memorium and the last person was Heath and they showed Sienna crying. She is human after all! Emily Blunt looked delicious, as always. And she has some kind of orange-red-black hair. Eva Green actually looked classy? Not like some retarded goth slut. Loved her look.

And Emily Blunt bashed Matthew McCanaughey. Go girl!

The Oscar luncheon took place Monday.

Here's the big class pic!

Don't you love the bottom left? Hal, Ellen, Casey, Julie, Sarah and Marion together! Awesome. And noticed what Marion's head is between!!! LOL! (Lucky gal.)

Though Laura Linney, Amy Ryan and Marion are so the hottest there. And I love how the one Coen Brother appears to look lost without the other one. Oh, fun times.

I live for the big Oscar Class picture!

Here's the amazing writers. I'm still overjoyed that Sarah Polley is an Oscar nominee!
