He was a friend of mine...

"Working with Heath was one of the purest joys of my life. He brought to the role of Ennis more than any of us could have imagined – a thirst for life, for love, and for truth, and a vulnerability that made everyone who knew him love him. His death is heartbreaking." - Ang Lee, the director of Brokeback Mountain, on Heath Ledger

I am a movie lover. Reality is not quite good enough for us which is why there's always a desperate need to escape for a few hours. In those brief hours, an artist is given the opportunity to entertain us, make us think, make us laugh, make us cry, enlighten us. Perhaps the greatest connection made between the silver screen and its audience is knowing that what you're seeing is hitting you in a way it is not hitting anyone else. More basically, when watching a film, we are alone no matter who surrounds us. We can all lay our opinion under broad terms like "good" or "bad" but each individual moment of that movie magic is being felt by you in a different way than anyone else.

So when an artist and their art comes along that we respond to, we will keep them with us for the rest of our lives. For me, it is true of Robert Altman. I will see every Robert Altman movie I can. I love his view of the world. I love his drifting camera and the way all his characters could have their own movies, feel like living breathing people. It is also true for Nicole Kidman, whose elegance and acting style always keep me captivated.

This is why it is so brutal for us cinephiles when one of these artists dies. I don't recall the last celebrity death that didn't make me gasp. Both Brad Renfro (to me, Josh from Ghost World) and Suzanne Pleschette (Karen's mother, Lois, on Will and Grace) passed away in the past 10 days. Suzanne was 70, Brad was 25. When someone older dies, we mourn the loss, but celebrate the life that was lived. When someone so young dies, we mourn the loss and the life that wasn't finished. Both of these people committed comedic characters to my memory. If you know me, you know how much I love both Ghost World and Will and Grace. The humor and characters of both can sum up much of who I am. I guess you really are what you watch.

Over the past hours, since learning of the death of Heath Ledger, I have felt a great loss. It was River Phoenix all over again. River was also deeply attached to the generation before mine, and to cinema lovers for his turn as a gay hustler in My Own Private Idaho. The sky was the limit. The loss of Heath was probably my generation's first true celebrity loss. It felt like so much more. When an actor and filmmaker creates a character, in order for it to be in the level of Phoenix's in Idaho and Ledger's in Brokeback Mountain, part of their soul is shared. It's not just about method or style, they pull part of themselves out and leave it all in the open. This is why their performances deserve to be called brave, not because of the "playing gay" part. Afficionados of film will have a handful of actors and films that they have a connection to. Because of this, we will follow their career with great interest and see much of what they do. And when they die, since they gave us part of themselves, a little bit of us dies with them.

What a nice change of pace he was from the classic Hollywood, clean cut type! Both he and Michelle Williams didn't seem into the whole Hollywood thing - a genuine rarity for young actors. A true bohemian who built up an eclectic resume working with many great talents, it seemed that between his Oscar nominated turn in Brokeback to his role as the Joker in this summer's Dark Knight, he was at a point in his career that any actor would envy. Add to that, he was attached to Terrence Malick's next film. I won't soon forget Mr. Ledger crooning to Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You or telling Billy Bob Thornton he loved him right before his character's suicide in Monster's Ball. Those deranged clips from him in The Dark Knight are a distinct contrast to the image most of us will hold closest in his career and the one that will now have even more of an emotional whallop: the final scene in Brokeback Mountain.

My thoughts are with everyone Heath's short life touched, especially his daughter Matilda Rose.

If you can't fix it, you've gotta stand it.....

I'll post some more on this tomorrow as it's late and since hearing about this I've felt pretty sick.

HEATH LEDGER
1979 - 2008

And the nominees are...

OMG - they don't actually suck???

(OMG - KATHY BATES!!!)

While it can make one frustratingly mad to ponder how exactly Jason Reitman got in for Juno over Joe Wright for Atonement, you know what, who cares?

When is the last time the two most acclaimed movies of the year went head to head in the Best Picture Oscar race?

Have I ever told you how much I adore Laura Linney?

Complete randomness:

Bourne got 3 nominations! Enchanted - 3 songs! LOL - will Amy Adams perform all of them? Norbit is an Oscar-nominated film! I knew Across the Universe would get in somewhere. I really don't care that I didn't do too great with my predix, because I'm happy there were a lot of deserving people nominated. It's terrific that Sarah Polley is now an Oscar nominee. They really didn't go for Into the Wild, surprising. Sean Penn is probably drunk already. VIGGO! SAOIRSE!!! Isn't it hilarious that Jennifer Aniston became an Acadedy member this year and Angelina isn't nominated? I really should've been more conservative with my Supp. Actor predix, but whatever, I'm fine.

I think the worst thing was Surf's Up over The Simpsons Movie??? Hasn't half the Academy done voicework on The Simpsons? I swear when I saw that I yelled "WHAT!" in a voice that was about 5 octives higher than my regular tone.

AND QUICK NOTE: I really think the Oscars WILL happen. Red carpet, celebs, montages, Jon Stewart, Blanchett and everything. And if they don't, well, I'll still have a party that has foods relating to the nominees! YIPPEE!

BIG SNUBS:
Into the Wild - no nom for Sean Penn.
Angelina - you know, I really think she isn't too well liked in Hollywood. She's estranged from her very famous father and apparently treats him like garbage and broke up a major marriage. Hollywood is obviously TEAM ANISTON!
Diving Bell for Picture!

BIG SURPRISES:
TLJ for Elah, not No Country.
LAURA LINNEY!
Jason Reitman? WTF?

AND HOLY FUCK I GOT A NO GUTS - NO GLORY RIGHT!!!!

OMG LAURA LINNEY!

NO GUTS - NO GLORY!

The crazy ass, last minute, "gee, wouldn't it be odd if this happens..."

These are by no means part of predictions:

Picture - The Bourne Ultimatum
Director - David Fincher - Zodiac
Actor - Mathieu Almaric - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Actress - Tang Wei - Lust Caution
Supp. Actor - Robert Downery Jr - Zodiac
Supp. Actress - Allison Janey - Juno
Orig. Screenplay - Waitress
Adapt. Screenplay - Away From Her

Oh, and I hear that Lionsgate sent screeners of that included a triple feature of 3:10 To Yuma, Away From Her and Bug.

God, it would have to be the best thing ever if Ashley Judd got in. I would be on cloud 9.

OFFICIAL OSCAR PREDICTIONS!

Announced Tuesday morning at 8:30AM Eastern. No word yet on the co-announcer. I've got my fingers crossed for Catherine Zeta-Jones!

At this point, I'll state that the only category I'm confident in is Cinematography. I don't recall the Academy's preferential balloting system ever having such an impact as it will this year. I'm getting the feeling that something like The Bourne Ultimatum or Zodiac will surprise with 4-5 nominations including Best Picture. The techs have been especially crazy the past couple of years so don't be surprised if Across the Universe or 3:10 To Yuma push out some major contenders in those categories. But most odd about this season is the complete American guild snubbing of Atonement, which if there were any justice, would lead the nominations Tuesday morning. It was ignored by the WGA, SAG, PGA and DGA despite leading the Globes and BAFTA nominations. When it comes to Oscar predicting, it's best to remember this: hope for the best, predict the most mediocre.

But perhaps the most maddening of all is that 5th slot in Best Actress. I usually like to go 5/5 in Actress and Supp. Actress but I don't see that happening this year. I decided to stick with the SAG nominees, despite that Amy Adams, Nikki Blonsky, Keira Knightley or Laura Linney could show up in lead. While Kelly MacDonald, Samantha Morton, Jennifer Garner and Saoirse Ronan are ready to take out Keener and Dee in Supporting. I think my bravest prediction is Supp. Actor.

But anyway...

Good luck to everyone in contention!

I'll start with the techs!

Congrats to all the Winners. Maybe this is the first time in over 50 years where both Picture winners don't get an Oscar Best Picture nominee... This is probably the best batch of Globes winners in a long while.....

...which is what makes me so sad to report. I can't believe, can't even fathom how anyone could prefer this press release format to a real show. Okay, if you're a pundit and care nothing more than your score (and if you are, you're probably SOL right now as there were surprises aplenty in this group), then I understand. But really???? How great would Tina Fey have been accepting her Globe? Oh, and after this week's 30 Rock, she so deserved it! What will the headlines be tomorrow? Will we read winners' reactions? Will Billy Bush ever realize what a tool he is?

I feel like when Crash beat Brokeback all over again...

And in the "dream" Globes of the night that I'm trying to run in my head, these women looked great:

Rose Byrne
Marion Cotillard
Julie Christie
Tina Fey
Katherine Heigl
Michelle Pfeiffer
Ellen Page

And didn't Diablo Cody dress crazy? Wasn't Steve Carell gesture to Tina when she won hilarious? Didn't Keira look like she had just given Saoirse coke? I almost thought Helen Mirren was going to hump Daniel Day-Lewis on stage? And howabout Sandra Oh rolling her eyes when they said Heigl's name as a nominee? Javier and Marion's speeches were so moving! And Angelina misprononcing Atonement?
Oh wait, none of that happened. Now, I'm going to go cry.

It's 10:17 and the show should still be going on.

Thanks again, AMPTP!

GLOBE PREDIX & WHAT TO WATCH!

In case you haven't heard, the Golden Globes will be reduced to a mere press conference Sunday night at 9ish. I will not be watching, rather recording the event which I believe is being hosted by Access Hollywood's resident tools Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell.

I will tuning into Fox for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles which stars the only person in 300 who didn't have a penis, Lena Headey. Afterwards, I will be watching the first part of the miniseries Commanche Moon. So that's my night in a nutshell. I'll probably check out the winners during a commercial break.

So my 2nd favorite night of the year has been taken down to that. Hopefully, my favorite night of the year will go on as scheduled. The SAGs are in 2 weeks, of course they will be on. The WGA will not hold on its own award show, but the SAGs will go forward. Hmm...

Anywho:

I'm thinking Atonement is done. Sadly. Did you see Keira and Mr. McAvoy (*sigh*) on the cover of Entertainment Weekly? Check it out. Then, change your pants.
